In a recent study (Do drowning and anoxia kill head lice?) researchers found that 100 percent of tested lice survived 8 hours without oxygen, and 6 hours immersed in water. Many lice were able to survive under those conditions for much longer.

What does this mean:
Most home remedies will not start to kill live lice unless the treatment is longer than 8 hours. The study shows the treatment would need to last 14 hours to kill 88% of the live lice. These home treatments include butter, mayonnaise, oils, petroleum jelly, Listerine, swimming, etc
The study confirmed the non-toxic treatment for live lice used by LCA Kingwood results in head lice death within 30 min of treatment.
Lice Treatments:
A successful Lice Treatment requires addressing the live lice and the unhatched eggs (nits). Any home remedy treatment can only kill live lice, not nits (unhatched eggs).
